Finding a good mascara is not unlike finding your "soul mate." A lot of times, especially in the beginning, you just pick out the really good-looking (sparkly, fancy, bright pink) ones, and they turn out to be super disappointing (clumpy, cheap, just all-around bad).
You have to trudge through some horrible ones to find one you're happy with, but at least you learn what works and what doesn't.
And crucially, it's a deal where I might personally be completely head over heels for it, but it might not cast the same spell over you. So please keep that in mind because I don't want to steer you into a bad relationship. I'm like that friend who's always trying to set you up with her cute, single friends. If you can get sample sizes of these mascaras, do that before you buy it. It's the equivalent of Facebook stalking a blind date before the big night so you don't have to have someone call you so you can escape mid-date (aka: throw away a just-opened tube) a la Jen Aniston in "The Breakup."
I just say this because I find that some mascaras work really well on MY lashes, but then I use it on someone with thicker / longer / thinner / shorter / weaker / stronger lashes than mine, and the results can vary WILDLY. I think it's kind of like hair products; different ones work better depending on what your troubles and strengths are. Same deal with mascara. I certainly wouldn't be recommending them if I didn't think you'd like them, but different lashes respond to different mascara formulas so these are just my PERSONAL favs.
With makeup, I'm loyal to only a select few brands / products because I like to try everything out (play the field, I suppose), and with mascara, I'm totally Shania Twain because "I change my mind . . . a million times," so I currently have four everLASHting soul mates. #PolygamousPrimper
Turns out I'm a bit of a hooch when it comes to mascara.
ULTA's Twisted Volume Mascara . . . I love! This is probably the JTT-in-the-90s of the bunch because I think everyone will love it. I went on a mascara-applying spree for Steph's wedding a few weeks ago, and it worked well on everyone. Added bonus: it's 2 for $10 right now (and it's usually $10 for one so you're just getting one for free now). Snaps for that! I don't know that it adds a ton of volume, but it's great at fanning out and getting in between all those lovely lashes and "million-izing" them.
L'Oreal's Voluminous False Fiber Lashes: B-E-A-Utiful and a budget-friendly drugstore option. It says it's for volume, but I think it's better at lengthening (most mascaras that tout their "fiber" quality seem to be better at lengthening because it wraps around your lashes and pulls them up). Also, the wand is very similar to the ULTA Twisted Volume wand so I'd go for one or the other. I put this one on there for everyone who doesn't have great access to an ULTA store since those two are so similar.
LORAC Pro mascara: I'm gonna go all Siskel & Ebert and say "two thumbs way up." This mascara wand is more like a magic wand. The abundance of bristles paired with the fact that it tapers at the end make for a pretty enchanting application. Voila! THIS is your volumizing mascara. When I apply my mascara, I always use two different mascaras: one for volume and one for length. This is my go-to for volume. PS I just found out that LORAC is Carol spelled backwards because, apparently, Carol is their founder and CEO so . . .
Finally, I had to add in a good waterproof mascara because it's summer, and oily eyelids suck like a Dyson with unlimited voltage. This waterproof mascara is a survivor. You're probably well aware, but don't make a habit of using waterproof mascara. They stick on well, but you lose more lashes in the cleanup process. Urban Decay's doesn't seem to be as glue-y as most I've used, though, and I like the wand and ease of application. I don't use it a whole bunch, but when I do, I am really banking on it to do its job, so I'm willing to shell out the extra green to ensure I don't have Minnie Mouse polka dot all over my eyelids. This one's a keeper.
Hope you're having a fabulous Friday, guys, and have a wonderful weekend! Game face.
